Alcon Blue Collective was an artistic and socio-political action created in order to protect the meadows of Zakrzówek against developers and the city of Kraków's plan to build a housing estate there.
Zakrzówek is a part of Kraków's public space close to the city centre. A former limestone quarry, today a reservoir surrounded by meadows and forests, it is one of the favourite recreational spaces for Kraków's citizens. On warmer days a lot people swim and dive in this area or use it as a place for picnics. Zakrzówek is also important for ecological reasons – it is a site where a rare species of butterfly, the so called common blue butterfly, lives.
The action not only managed to unite different groups of city activists and ecologists but also aroused an enormous interest among the citizens of Kraków. It started a dialogue with the city authorities on the subject of public spaces, achieving what years of letter-writing and complying with formal procedures couldn't.
Its main “tool” was a pair of blue wings used as a visual sign of protest against the politics of the city. People of Kraków were invited to make their own wings (according to the instructions given in a special video promoted in the internet), photograph themselves with them and come for a manifestation in front of the town hall, as well as take part in a big picnic in Zakrzówek in 2011. As a result the city changed its urban plan, providing the investor with the possibility of building a housing estate that was twice as small. In 2014, the opportunity arose to establish the complete protection of Zakrzówek. However, the city authorities started to court the investors once again, providing the possibility to build on part of the site. This was part of a wider urban plan for the entire city, which was voted through. Once again the the Alcon Blue Collective, working together with Niedzielni and the Association of Green Zakrzówek, organised two major protests, this time convincing Cracovians and the city to buy all of Zakrzówek. Thanks to this the long-lasting conflict was solved.
As a result of the protest the city council decided to change its plans and preserve Zakrzówek - a place of peace and natural beauty in the heart of the city – for the citizens. The city made the decision to buy the majority of Zakrzówek and to open a public park there.
