Polish Mothers on Tree Stumps

Matki Polki

“Polish Mothers on Tree Stumps" is an informal civic movement which arose as a reaction to the mass felling of trees in Poland as a result of the liberalization of the law known as Szyszko’s Law. The campaign was begun by Cecylia Malik's protest, during which for a month she breast-fed her 6-month-old son Ignacy at different Kraków logging sites. She put photographs of her performances on Facebook, in an effort to show the scale of the massacre of trees. Other mums joined the campaign, and Anna Grajewska joined to share the co-organization. The group’s first performance took place on March 3, 2017 in Kraków. Photographs from the Kraków performance went viral on the Internet and circulated in Polish and European media, becoming an illustration of Szyszko’s Law and launching similar protests in other cities. Mothers with small children went to logging sites all over Poland to document the scale of destruction and demand immediate changes to the amended Act and the resignation of the Minister of the Environment Jan Szyszko. An appeal and image of the performance art-protest of Polish Mothers on Tree Stumps were sent to the President Andrzej Duda and the Prime Minister Beata Szydło. A third photograph and report on the destruction of Polish nature, prepared by leading Polish environmental organizations, was presented by "Polish Mothers Tree Stumps" to Pope Francis, referring to his encyclical "Laudato Si". The trip to Rome was the culmination of a month-long crowdfunding campaign. The protest pilgrimage was to request the intervention of the Pope, as the Minister of the Environment and his anti-green policy is supported by the Polish Catholic Church and Catholic media.

In Poland, Polish Mothers on Tree Stumps in 2017 joinend to the the Coalition Save Rivers and acting for natural rivers in Poland as River Sisters artistic campein.

The action of the Polish Mothers on Tree Stumps is continued as action Feeding Hope by Belgian nursing mothers where, with the consent of Cecylia Malik, the artist Maria Lucia Cruz Correira persuaded the caring mothers to perform during climate marches during COP 24 in autumn 2018.
